1965 Checker Marathon taxi
The Checker Marathon was an automobile produced in Michigan between 1961 and 1982. The Marathon was designated the A12 in the taxicab lineup after the Superba was discontinued in 1963. The Checker Marathon remained in production until 1982. 1965 however was an interesting year for the Cab as according to a wiki Checker and Markin were facing antitrust charges by the NY state legislature as they were charged with controlling both the taxi service and the making of the taxis themselves.
This cab has made many theatrical appearances, which fits its turbulent history. This was the infamous taxi driven by Robert De Niro in Martin Scorsesse’s 1976 classic Taxi Driver. Others may recognize her from the Sunshine Cab Company in one of Danny DeVito’s earlier TV series hits named Taxi which featured Andy Kaufman. We remember this cab most notoriously from the N64 Rush Series, and its many appearances throughout the GTA franchise. In all likelihood you will first remember it as Phoebe Buffay’s from the TV series Friends, when she drives upstate with Joey and Chandler to meet her real dad, but that was the 1977 model.
