La Charles de Gaulle (R91) è l’unica portaerei della Marina francese attualmente in servizio. Essa è anche la prima e unica portaerei a propulsione nucleare costruita in Europa occidentale.
Doveva essere raggiunta nel 2015 da una seconda portaerei, la PA 2, ma il progetto è stato respinto.
La nave prende il suo nome dal generale, statista e presidente della Repubblica francese Charles de Gaulle. La componente aerea, formata da Rafale M e da E-2C Hawkeye, l’elettronica avanzata ed i missili Aster rendono questa portaerei probabilmente la più potente d’Europa. La Charles de Gaulle utilizza un sistema di catapulte a vapore CATOBAR (Catapult Assisted Take Off But Arrested Recovery) lunghe 75 metri, le stesse usate sulle portaerei statunitensi della classe Nimitz.

The Charles de Gaulle (R91) is the only French Navy aircraft carrier currently in service. It is also the first and only nuclear-powered aircraft carrier built in Western Europe.
It had to be reached in 2015 by a second aircraft carrier, PA 2, but the project was rejected.
The ship takes its name from the general, statesman and president of the French Republic Charles de Gaulle. The aerial component, formed by Rafale M and E-2C Hawkeye, advanced electronics and Aster missiles make this aircraft carrier probably the most powerful in Europe. The Charles de Gaulle uses a 75-meter CATOBAR steam system (Catapult Assisted Take Off But Arrested Recovery), the same used on Nimitz-class aircraft carriers in the United States.
