Astrodome
Because the Houston Astros won the 2017 world series I decided to model the Astrodome! The Astrodome was the home of the Astros from its opening in 1965 to 1999. Roy Hofheinz envisioned the Astrodome so baseball fans could escape the heat and rain outs.
Many innovations were made at the Astrodome, enough to be nicknamed the Eighth Wonder of the World. The stadium was the world’s first domed stadium and the first stadium to use artificial turf (AstroTurf). Baseball, football, concerts, and rodeos could be held in an air conditioned environment. Private skyboxes were introduced for VIPs. The first animated scoreboard was also introduced at the Astrodome.
Today the stadium is unused and was replaced by NRG Stadium right next to it. The Astrodome is a State Antiquities Landmark and can not be demolished. Plans are moving along slowly to reuse the building as a parking garage and a multi-use space.
The asset is modelled after the Astrodome before the four cylindrical access ramps were demolished and the ticket booths removed.
