Atça – Meander River Turkey
The Menderes River quite literally is the very definition of “meandering river”. The name is of Ancient Greek origin: Μαίανδρος / Maíandros). The river is characterised by a very convoluted path along the lower reach. As such, in ancient times, the name of the river had become a common noun meaning anything convoluted and winding, such as decorative patterns or speech and ideas, as well as the geomorphological feature Strabo said: “… its course is so exceedingly winding that everything winding is called meandering.”
Unlike most of my maps, this is a true to life map.
This map is a gift for Tomcat, who is from the area and is working closely with me on a project for the upcoming Snowfall DLC. It also happens to fit perfectly as an ideal river map for this game. Also (uncharacteristically) a flat city builder’s paradise! I added an extra rail line in the South, and also the Menderes is not navigable, but for the purpose of the game, it has a shipping lane with two connections. Everything else is fully connected, as well. the river has correct (and powerful!) water flow from East towards West, as in real life.
Load on your computer is kept to a bare minimum (notice the small file size!). Although the Mediterranean Theme does say required, If you don’t have the terrain theme, you should still be able to play this map. You can ignore the initial error message upon loading, and once you save the game for the first time, I believe the error message will not show again. At least, this was what happened to me when I tested it. Just be aware that the vanilla oil texture, used to decorate the mountains, will look pretty awful.
Atça
This is Turkey’s first planned city, and it is nicknamed “The Little Paris” because its design is based on the famous Place de l’Étoile of Paris. Its location on this map is one tile north of the start square (dead center of the map).
The lands in this part of Aydın Province consist of extremely rich agricultural areas, so fertile soil is spread throughout. The oil texture is used to color the mountains to a shade seen in images of the area. This plus the custom Mediterranean Terrain Theme by Big Bad Nonja make this truly realistic and representative of the looks of the local area.
About the rail line: The Basmane-Nazilli Regional (Turkish: Basmane-Selçuk-Nazilli Bölgesel) is a regional rail service operated by the Turkish State Railways. The trains use the former ORC mainline from Izmir to Nazilli, a distance of 175 km (109 mi). Service from Izmir to Nazilli dates back to 1882, when the Oriental Railway Company opened the line.
