Berlin Molecule Man
The Molecule Man is a public sculpture by Jonathan Barofsky installed in the Spree river, Berlin. The 100ft (30m) tall artwork was commissioned by Allianz SE in 1999 to adorn their new Treptowers HQ.
This model consists of 12 flat planes, 4 for each man, with alpha-mapped holes and profiles, and thousands of triangles for the edges. The 2 outer planes have the texture that you see, while the two inner planes are dark grey with gradients around the holes. This technique makes the holes look a bit 3D when rotated without having to commit any triangles to the hundreds of cut-outs. The edges of each man are modeled, taking up most of the ~3k triangle weight, to match the alpha profiles. This was a fun model for me as I was able to put my Photoshop/Illustrator/Blender/C:S skills to work in harmony and crank this out in just a few days.
