Calgary – 1:1 Scale
This is a 1:1 model of central Calgary, AB.
The playable area covers from approx. Crowchild to Deerfoot, and 32nd Ave N to Glenmore. You’ll want the 25 Square Unlock mod if you want to play with the entire map.
Heightmap from terrain.party, rivers hand-traced in Photoshop. Highways (Deerfoot, 16th, and portions of Crowchild and Glenmore) and four railways are modelled.
Starting square is Memorial Drive coming off of Deerfoot, right above the Bow River. The whole area is sprinkled with trees (more heavily along the rivers), and there are oil, ore, and fertile ground patches.
The map is very playable, the biggest issue is that the Bow/Elbow flows are fairly weak (just like real life!), so much that your sewage can start seeping upriver after 3-4 intakes are placed… so you will likely need to make use of water towers until you reach Glenmore Resevoir (which should be dam-able, but don’t expect much in the way of electricity generation).
I’ve been having fun laying out actual streets using BetterImageOverlay, and screencaps from Google Maps. The 1:1 scale works! The average block is 9 wide, leaving exactly enough room for 4×2 zoning, with one space in the middle I put gravel footpaths on to simulate Calgary’s pervasive alleyways (I tried it with dirt roads, doesn’t really work as they’re zonable).
Enjoy! All feedback is greatly appreciated.
