CJ Nickel Department Store
C.J. Nickel was founded as a small dry goods store outside of Chugwater, WY in 1906 by Cash Jimmy Nickel. By 1931 Nickel owned over 150 stores in the Mountain West region. The department store primarily focused on locations in downtown cities along main streets and expanded nationwide during the 1940’s and 50’s. However, through a series of failed business ventures and poor management, the company struggled with it’s brand. One of it’s failed expansions was in the discount merchandise store “Nickel & Dime All the Time.” By the late 1990’s, the retailer suffered another series of setbacks with the decline of the suburban shopping mall. Stock prices had dipped and the brand was seen as a budget retailer only a step above K-Mart and Wal*mart. Fortunately one successful venture that kept the business afloat was the Nickel’s investment in a chain of gentlemen’s clubs “Ca$h n A$$.” By 2012, the company rebranded and embraced it’s discount retail status offering customers “Everyday Value” and “Almost low prices, almost…” and the name was officially changed from C.J. Nickel to CJNickel to appear more trendy. Despite the rocky journey for the company, it remains the 11th largest retailer in the SimNation as of 2016. (Wikipedia)
