Highway Access Point
This interchange connects an elevated highway to a six-lane road. The design can look pretty confusing, so here’s a brief explanation:
I like diverging windmill ( ) design a lot for highway to highway interchanges. Here I tried to emulate it as well as I could while also keeping the required space relatively small. The goal is to avoid congestion by making the (vanilla C:S) AI utilise all (or at least most of the) lines.
Both highway directions have ramps connecting them to both six-lane road directions separately. Therefore, the roundabout is actually never used as a roundabout. The traffic passing through via the six-lane road will drive half a circle while traffic leaving to the highway will take exit ramp shortly after entering the roundabout and traffic coming from the highway will enter from ramp shortly before leaving the roundabout.
Known problems:
– The innermost line of the roundabout is underused, since vehicles can not use it to exit to the six-lane road (without mods, that is). This slightly diminishes the maximum capacity of the interchange.
– This design can not help if the jams are caused by something further along the road, usually by traffic lights at the first intersection.
