Lotus Esprit S1 (007 Wet Nellie)
Can you swim? The prices range, but she is listed on ebay. The Esprit was launched in 1975, and is tight little number built by Lotus in the UK. The Esprit served between 1976 and 2004. She is however best known for her appearance in the James Bond franchise. Imagine this 1977 S1 hiding fins for submarine mode from The Spy Who Loved Me, and you finally have that all-terrain vehicle to match wits with the upcoming Natural Disasters DLC.
The Lotus Esprit was the first car since the DB5 that could unquestionably match 007 for screen presence. According to Roger Moore – he’s sure the car got applauses at the time from even behind the iron curtain. However, the way the Lotus made its way into 007 makes for just as good a story as well. Top Gears ’50 Years of Bond Cars’ released in 2012 tributes a man named Don for getting the Esprit in the film.
The Bond franchise was already massively successful at the time and everyone was vying to get their cars into the films. Don drove up the Esprit to Pinewood and the Bond offices, parked the car and went off to see a friend. The car hadn’t even gone on sale yet and deliberately parked the car in a way that hid it was a Lotus. While crowds from the offices were checking out the car, this Don fellow pushed his way in and drove off. It was this tactic which brought the Bond people chasing after Lotus, and this car chasing after our hearts. Here’s to Don! Subscribe and enjoy.
“Rght. Now pay attention, 007. I want you to take great care of this equipment. There are one or two rather special accessories…” – Q
