Perla Residential Complex
Perla is residential building located in Budweis, Czech Republic. This building was constructed in 1964 and it was part of a centrally planned urban development experiment conducted from Prague. The aim of the “experiment” was to test new construction techniques and materials such as reinforced concrete for rapid construction of residential cells, as well as to promote the political idea of “collective living”. This means that buildings like Perla had their own canteen for residents and places for leisure activities such as the top-floor café and cinema in this case.
The use of space in this building has changed over the years. Currently there is a restaurant on the ground floor. The “Vesmír” cinema was in operation until 2003, since then its space has been transformed into athletic gym. The most unique top-floor café is not operating, sadly, and it is available as office space.
Thanks to its uniqueness, the complex is currently listed as the cultural heritage of the Czech Republic.
