Terrain Themes Mod
This mod makes it possible to apply Terrain Themes to your game.
You can subscribe to theme mods from the workshop for use with this mod or use the included “Improved Default Themes”. (See images above)
“Improved Default Themes” are essentially the default game textures for each biome
except they have been fixed to remove seams and ugly tiling effects, as well as featuring improved
water surface and foam textures, more realistic colors for Fertile Land, Forest Ground,
Grass and Water pollution, among other cosmetic fixes.
It also allows you to load any of the improved default game themes on any map, regardless of biome. For example, if there’s a boreal map that you love but you don’t like the looks of boreal biome, with this mod you can change it to look like any other biome, or any custom theme you subscribe to.
- Environment Colors Changer – this mod manipulates the same color settings and could cause problems/conflicts
- Water Color Changer – this mod manipulates the same color settings and can also cause problems/conflicts
- Terrain Textures Replacer – this mod changes terrain textures and can cause conflicts
- No more purple pollution mods – these mods change pollution colors and can cause conflicts
- Any mod that changes colors, textures, or texture tiling factors.
You don’t HAVE to remove these mods, disabling them in content manager is sufficient.
The only really important one to disable is Terrain Textures replacer, or you probably won’t get the Themes’ textures if that mod loads after this one. However, none of these mods are going to cause errors if you don’t remove them, they will just make this mod not able to do its job.
- Adds an options menu that allows you to select terrain themes you’ve subscribed to from a drop-down menu
- Features improved default themes for the game’s default environment biomes
- Allows you to change themes live while in-game from the options panel, without having to re-load the level
- Works on city, map editor and asset editor
- Saves your theme settings to the save file, automatically applying it next time you load the save(if the theme is still enabled in content manager). Does not break saves if you remove the mod later on.
- Lets you use your favourite map with a different biome’s default theme. Love that map but hate the look of the temperate biome? No problem, select your preferred biome theme from the dropdown menu.
- If for some reason you don’t like the “Improved Default Themes”, you can disable the feature in the options menu on a fresh game load, ie. you have to restart the game to disable the feature if you’ve already loaded a level with it on.
While in the main menu:
Select a theme while in the main menu and any level you load will display that theme, as long as that theme is allowed in the level’s biome. If it isn’t, the “Improved Default Theme” for that level’s biome will be loaded.
When you select a theme from the dropdown menu an information panel will appear letting you know which biomes you can use it on.
While a level is loaded:
Use the mod’s options panel in-game to easily switch themes, you can load a theme into your current level without having to reload the level. Themes that are not allowed in the current biome you’re in, won’t appear in the dropdown menu while in-game. If you download a theme then look for it in the dropdown and its not there, you either forgot to enable it in content manager, or you’re playing in a biome that’s forbidden for that theme.
- Subscribe to this mod, open your game and enable it in the content manager.
- Search the workshop for Terrain Themes and subscribe to them, then enable them in content manager.
- Open the options menu for this mod, and select your desired theme from the dropdown. If it’s not there, you may need to restart the game, or you forgot to enable it in content manager.
- Load a city or map. Your selected theme will be loaded(As long as you load a biome that’s allowed for that theme).
- Now you can save your city or map, and next time you open it, the theme will be automatically applied to it(As long as it’s still enabled.)
If you leave the Use Improved Default Textures option enabled, improved themes will automatically be loaded into your maps when you open them, even if you leave the None option selected in the dropdown menu.

First, subscribe to this mod, then get the Terrain Themes Creator add-on, and follow the instruction on the add-on’s page. I’ll be creating a tutorial for it in the next few days, as well as detailed instructions on how I make seamless, non-repeating textures with photoshop.
In the meanwhile, please send your questions to tpbsworkshop@gmail.com, leave a comment below, or visit the Simtropolis.com Cities Skylines Modding forums for more information.
A big shoutout goes to boformer, who taught me how to create the “themes” functionality for this mod to be possible.
I spent over three weeks making this mod and fixing the game’s textures. This is my biggest project to date, I hope you like it ?
If you like this mod and you’re feeling generous and would like to buy me the morning paper or a drink, or just support me while I continue creating awesome content to improve our games, you can donate using the link below.

* Screenshots taken using BloodyPenguins awesome Daylight Classic mod.
* Themes in the Preview Image for this mod are not included in this download.
* This mod includes 48 high quality textures for the Improved biome themes, thus the large download size. Don’t be put off by the size, they are only loaded 12 at a time when you load a city, and none are loaded when you use other themes from the workshop.
This mod destroys the game’s own texture to save memory, as such, you must restart the game after you remove the mod. Or you’ll get a very interesting landscape :p
